When the Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu Federation banned his trademark move, he proved the effectiveness of his entire grappling style by defeating the legendary Royler Gracie without 'The Twister'.In Mastering the Twister: Jiu-Jitsu for Mixed Martial Arts Competition, Bravo uses over 1,200 color photos and descriptive narrative to illustrate snaring an opponent in the infamous Twister from virtually every control position. Also revealed is the entire Twister Side Control game, dozens of submissions from the mount, numerous routes to take your opponent's back, highly effective ways to pass your opponent's guard, and the secrets of 'The Truck', Bravo's patented control position. Bottom line - Mastering the Twister by Eddie Bravo is in the top 3 of my favorite bjj books. I can't decide if it is #2 or #3, it's a toss-up.

Any guesses as to what #1 may be, lol?I first read Mastering the Twister like 2-3 years ago probably. I hate to say it but it didn't make much of an impact on me at the time. I was still a blue belt in bjj with a ton of wrestling experience but I think I was spreading myself too thin in terms of trying to learn as many bjj techniques as possible.

You know Bottom line - Mastering the Twister by Eddie Bravo is in the top 3 of my favorite bjj books. You know that saying right?

I fear not the man who can do 1000 techniques but the man who can do 3-4 techniques well. I was the dude going for 1000.I just picked up Mastering the Twister again maybe at the start of this year. No, I am not talking about the dumb names or the hype behind it. This book truly opened up my head about 1) taking the back and 2) keeping mount. The mount position has always been my weakest, top or bottom, lol. I felt like I could get to mount easier than I could maintain it.

I knew, friggin' KNEW, that within seconds of getting mount I was going to get bucked off. I don't know if I missed that bjj class or the 30 classes but I was lost when it came to find something to do from mount. I was like, arm bar or wait? And that was it.This time through the book, especially in the mount section, I was like oh! That's all you have to do? You basically secure mount with one of Bravo's positions. From there, you try and set up basically 3-4 options for your opponent and wait. Seriously.Rather than going for mount after getting reversed so many times, I started preferring to stay in side control.

After a few weeks of rolling with the mindset of getting to mount, and then keeping it, I was able to use some of the techniques he showed in the book. Of course I am much better at 1-2 of them so I have been focusing on those.I would recommend Mastering the Twister for those:- who are familiar with the leg ride from wrestling.- who need help keeping mount.- who need help finishing from mount.- who do gi or no gi, it will help both.- who need help on back control and subs. The remaining sections include the twister, the truck, leg locks, the back, mma stuff, and more.

There is also a pretty in-depth biography of Eddie Bravo as well so if you'd like to learn more about his childhood. It's revealing for sure.Bravo, while not anti-gi, has made it known that he prefers bjj that is geared towards not having grips like what we see in mma or combat jiu-jitsu. Mastering the Twister shows you grips to use to secure the back and subs.

Despite what you have heard online, I know he's not anti-gi. Because I interviewed him one time and he told me. So there.I don't know if this is cool with goodreads or not but if you'd like to read maybe a slightly different review of Mastering the Twister, or you'd just like to visit an awesome site, you can click thisPeace and keep on rollin'. I recently reviewed Eddie Bravo's first Victory Belt book, Mastering the Rubber Guard, and Mastering the Twister is certainly a worthy successor.Where the first book focuses on Bravo's innovative approach to the guard game, the sequel covers his top game - the mount, side control, the sprawl, back control, and a unique position Bravo calls the truck. One of the most interesting parts of this book is the way Bravo discusses the development of his game.

It goes some way to explaining the genesis I recently reviewed Eddie Bravo's first Victory Belt book, Mastering the Rubber Guard, and Mastering the Twister is certainly a worthy successor.Where the first book focuses on Bravo's innovative approach to the guard game, the sequel covers his top game - the mount, side control, the sprawl, back control, and a unique position Bravo calls the truck. One of the most interesting parts of this book is the way Bravo discusses the development of his game. It goes some way to explaining the genesis of his unique approach. The twister of the title is a neck crank submission Bravo brought to jiu jitsu from wrestling where it's known as the guillotine. As a beginning jiu jitsu student under Jean Jacques Machado, Bravo built his entire game around this submission since he'd mastered it as a wrestler and few of his jiu jitsu opponents were aware of it.Eventually when his training partners learned that they could stymie Bravo by giving up their back or letting him claim mount position, he was forced to develop his game from those positions as well. Alan le may the searchers pdf download torrent. Typically for Bravo, he developed innovative and unique approaches to each position. One position discussed at great length is something Bravo calls 'the truck'. Its similar to the x-guard in that one player uses his four limbs to control the other man's legs but unlike the x-guard position, in the truck, both fighters are on the ground.I'm very curious to see if and when Bravo's twister game is applied to mma. I'm sure his theories are sound, although I'm not entirely sure that the twister, as a neck crank, would be a legal submission in the UFC.

Many of the submissions discussed in the book (such as 'The Doerkson' 'The Bustamante' and 'The Schaffer') have been used in the UFC already. The book itself is excellent, as are all of the Victory Belt publications I've reviewed. Plenty of full color photos to illustrate each move from multiple angles, clear explanations of each move, and commentary explaining 'why' at each step of the way. The Bravo books also include an excellent flow chart that shows how each position flows into the others, including multiple alternate routes and submissions from each position. As with his other book, this one includes an introduction that includes way too much information about Bravo's personal life, non-fighting interests and unusual beliefs. Its easily skipped for those like me who just don't want to know.If you haven't already got Mastering the Rubber Guard, I would get that before this one, but if you're looking to add some novel moves to your top game and/or are interested in a solid no gi grappling system, this is an excellent addition to your library.Co-authors Erich Krauss and Glen Cordoza have also done books with Fedor Emelianenko, Antonio Rodrigo Nogueira, Randy Couture, B.J. Penn, Karo Parisyan, Marcelo Garcia and Anderson Silva and I've enjoyed them all.
